The Impossible (Not to Cry)

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami hit the big screen in dramatic fashion last year.  The Impossible documents the amazing true story of a family of five facing the deadliest tsunami in recorded history (230,000 killed).  Not since the spate of disaster movies of the mid to late nineties has a family been up against such-- and I'm already running out of synonyms here--insurmountable odds.  And to add insult to injury they're on vacation in a foreign land, Thailand to be precise. Djake Exploits The Attic: Nightmare City (1980)

This week on Djake Exploits the Attic, I'm going to review the 1980 Italian "infected people" (don't call them zombies) gorefest, Nightmare City. Directed by Umberto Lenzi, infamously known for his Cannibal Holocaust rip-off, Cannibal Ferox (aka Make Them Die Slowly), and starring Hugo Stiglitz ("everyone in the German Army has heard of Hugo Stiglitz"), a Mexican actor who moved to Italy in the 70s to make exploitation flicks. The story is fairly simple: a military plane carrying a famous scientist Read more [...]

Postapocalyterature

It's been fairly quiet around here this week... almost too quiet. If Cinematic Attic were a movie, I'd be walking down a deserted street, sidestepping newspapers proclaiming an imminent zombie apocalypse. I'd have no idea how I got here, and I'd have no idea what to do. Then suddenly, a mutant vampire would grab at my leg from a sewer grate! OK, I guess it's not been that quiet here, and I imagine we writers got all hot and bothered for the Oscars and then ended up taking this week off to recover Read more [...]

After Oscars

Now that the Oscars are over, we all get to look back and defend our choices and continue to bash those that we felt were undeserving. But the truth is, often times when it comes down to an awards show like this, the actual movies and the work that they're showcasing get overshadowed. Wouldn't it be spectacular if the Oscars aired every single movie over a couple week period so everyone would be free to watch them and vote however they wanted? Since that's not really a possibility for most of Read more [...]

For Your Consideration: Lincoln

So while you’re nursing a hangover from the Presidents Day rager you threw, I thought I’d tell you about Stephen Spielberg’s Lincoln. The 16th President had a banner year in 2012 with no less than three movies.  I haven't seen the other two more fantastical vampire or zombie hunter versions, but the one based on a true story is quite good (not to say Lincoln didn't fight the undead during his off time). I enjoy history and the Civil War is an especially compelling time in American Read more [...]

Maurice Jarre: A man with eyes AND a face

I recently watched Georges Franju's Les yeux sans visage (Eyes Without a Face, for the less pretentious of us), and was immediately captivated by the music in the film. Maurice Jarre, the famed composer of the Lawrence of Arabia score, perfectly accentuates the skin-crawliness of this film. There are two main treatments of music in Les yeux: one, a forlorn lullaby, the other, a demented carnival waltz. The aforementioned lullaby can be heard in the track "Thème Romantique". Jarre flawlessly Read more [...]
