For a Good Time: Don’t Watch this Movie

Amour, a French language film by acclaimed German director Michael Haneke, is a meditation on mortality and its effects on the lives and love of two happily married octogenarians. Not exactly the most romantic notion but it is inevitable and while this film is quite bleak two outstanding performances are given by the leads, Emmanuelle Riva (Anne) and Jean-Louis Trintignant (Georges). This is a blessing because the movie, with the exception of a concert, takes place entirely within the confines of Read more [...]

How I Came to Own an iPod Nano for 55 Minutes (Or “Why Everything You Own Will Eventually Suck”): An Essay on Technology

It's a sad day when a beloved piece of technology dies. Sometimes it happens suddenly. Despite your best efforts to take care of it and keep it alive as long as possible, these things happen. You can wake up one day and it's gone. The hard drive is corrupt. Your DVD player just got too old and it was its time to go. It's ok, though. You'll get a BluRay to replace it and the hurt will eventually go away. I loved my 160GB iPod Classic. It was silver with a black and yellow stripe down its back that Read more [...]

Djake Exploits the Attic: Goodbye Uncle Tom (1971)

Djake here with the first post in a new series Deuce and I have been talking about in which we review a new exploitation or B-movie each week. An exploitation film is basically a low-budget flick that can't rely on big name stars, special effects or good writing and instead finds something to "exploit" to make money. That may be gore, sex, cheerleaders, kung fu, slavery, car crashes, the spaghetti west, aliens, revenge, chainsaw massacres, naked nuns, any number of things really. They were mainly Read more [...]

Fast and Furious 6: As Seen by Bill Simmons

Sometimes, you just have to let the masters do their thing. If you don't know him, Bill Simmons is a pop culture and sports writer over at ESPN, but he also has a website of his own called Grantland, where Chuck Klosterman (another excellent writer) collaborates quite often. Check it out. But while you're over there, check out Bill Simmons' review of the new Fast and Furious 6 trailer which premiered during the Super Bowl but got an extended edition just a few days later. It's hard to tell Read more [...]

3 Decidedly Different Documentaries

This last weekend I happened upon three "documentaries." I put the word in quotation marks because out of the three, only one looked and performed like what I'd consider a traditional documentary. Here's what I saw: Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives Actually, you can watch this documentary online. I'll even embed it here, so go nuts because it's great and relatively short (one hour). PARALLEL WORLDS, PARALLEL LIVES from EELS on Vimeo. If it's not working or if you'd prefer to know what the documentary Read more [...]

Dustin recommends Shame for your Valentine’s Day date movie!

I really meant to change the title of this post, but I didn't get around to it as I'm very busy. About halfway through watching this flick I realized I wasn't watching the romantic comedy I thought I was going to get. If you went out and watched Shame with your loved one without actually reading this post first, I'm willing to pay your first month's alimony cost as an apology. Man, this really wasn't the "date night" movie I was expecting. Everyone took their clothes off for this one! There Read more [...]
