Top 12 of 2012: “Cloud Atlas” (“Co-Review” by the Sitzchowski Brothers)

Good evening! We're back today with an admittedly enormous post to continue our 2012 review. It's so long that it even has two authors, who both took on new identities; Now Ryan and Paul are calling themselves the Sitzchowski Brothers in homage to the Wachowskis, the sibling pair who co-directed Cloud Atlas (along with director Tom Tykwer... but unless we can convince Jake to play "Tom Jykewer," then we'll just have one author fewer than the movie has directors). We'll begin with Paul's argument Read more [...]

Top 12 of 2012: “Django Unchained” (An Essay By Djake)

Good Evening! Tonight we'll continue looking back at 2012 with a review by Djake ("The D's silent," he assured me). This movie also made our group's Top 12 list, even though it came out in the final week of 2012. It's also currently leading our Readers' Poll of The Best Movies of 2012, which you should be sure to participate in by going here. Anyhow, without further ado, here's the review: Djake: I knew I would love Django Unchained as soon as I heard Quentin Tarantino was making a "Southern" Read more [...]

Top 12 of 2012: “The Hobbit” (Comments by Deuce)

Welcome back to our week-long series on notable movies from 2012! Today we've got Deuce's short and sweet commentary on The Hobbit. The movie made our group's Top 12 list, as well as some of our individual lists (although not all of us have seen it due to its very late release date). Also, you can check out Jake's review of the movie here for another perspective. So, without further Peter Jackson-esque stalling, here's Deuce's post: Deuce: I am going to assume you know about The Hobbit. I'm not Read more [...]

Movies on a Plane: Ryan Watches “Look Who’s Taken, Too!”

...At least I'm pretty sure that was the title. No, on closer inspection, it was Taken 2, starring Liam "Badass" Neeson: We just got back to Costa Rica early this morning. We took the only direct flight from Denver to San José, which is a Frontier flight that leaves at midnight and arrives at about 6:00 am. It's faster than a layover, but I'm pretty wiped out now. Especially since I spent the first two hours of the flight watching a movie on Frontier's free Direct TV, when I should probably Read more [...]

Review: “Kingdom of Heaven”

We watched this movie last weekend because it was on my "List of Books, Movies, and Music to Check Out." I really do have a list like that, but the trouble is that until just recently, I'd only write names of new recommendations, but never who recommended it to me or why they did so. So, I could have put a given item on the list because I heard about it in a grad school class 8 years ago, or I could have put it on there because Paul said there was a really funny scene in which a guy gets hit in the Read more [...]

Sitzman: Book Vs. Movie: “Casino Royale”

(She's not really purple, though. This isn't Star Wars.)I'll try to write a short, fast review for this, but that's what I say every time.OK, I just recently read Casino Royale by Ian Fleming for Sitzbook. It was OK; not that great, but also somehow addicting. It was published in 1953, and the (2nd) movie version came out in 2006, so there are obviously going to be some differences, especially in things like technology. But the movie was very different. The main characters are the same, at least Read more [...]
