Jesus Christ Superstar

If you've not seen JCS, I can heartily recommend it. It's excellent for many reasons: the songs, the acting, the singing, the setting, the nostalgic value, and the ability to make the viewer think. It's my favorite musical, and it's also on my list of top 20 movies in general. I've talked about it with ministers, Germans, devout church-goers, lapsed Catholics, non-believers, and even a drunk student in Madrid (who burst Jesus' part from "What's the Buzz"). The point is, if you're thinking, "But I'm not religious, so I'm not really interested," then you should still give it a chance. Read more [...]

A Couple of Mehs and a Blech

So I’m usually gushing about the movies I review. I like most movies; there are only a few I hate with an undying passion, and some that were completely forgettable. I thought, for a change, I’d cast aspersions on a few I saw recently. Two of them are OK (I guess, nothing special) but the last one is a real disappointment considering the stellar cast. I don’t know if I’m doing myself any favors telling you not to see a movie except to go out and see that movie to prove me wrong. But whatever Read more [...]

Dustin visits Nostalgia City and watches Space Raiders (1983)!

My family and I moved from Eau Claire, Wisconsin to Fort Collins, Colorado in 1984. I can remember my mom taking me to rent movies at this place that also rented out furniture and electronics (if you know where Cafe Mexicali is, it was in that business strip). I would look at the giant (27 inches!) Zenith television sets with wood paneling and dream of having one in my bedroom. In the meantime, however, I would only seem to rent one or two of the following (and watch them about 5 times before returning Read more [...]

Deuce pays $8 to watch the 2nd-best western of 1959

Netflix charges $8 per month for streaming movies/tv-shows.  I subscribe.  It's now the 23rd of March and I've only watched one movie, Warlock (1959).  It was awesome!  Good thing that $8 goes toward unlimited Dora the Explorer and Diego episodes or I'd cancel... Warlock is the name of the town.  It's troubled by a gang of bad guys (redundant?).  Warlock employs Henry Fonda as their marshal for protection.  He's got a partner, Anthony Quinn.  Anthony Quinn's got some secrets, enough Read more [...]

Best Time Travel Film in the Last 20 Years!

Djake brought his Blu-Ray copy of Looper for Sam and I to borrow while he was in Boston the next week and a half. We immediately watched the movie that night since we have been looking forward to seeing it after hearing so many good things. The cover of the Blu-Ray was pretty cool with a gun-pointing Bruce Willis and also an unrecognizable Joseph-Gordon-Levitt looking tough. See, J-G-L is actually B. Willis, just 30 years younger. It took a bit to get used to as J-G-L's makeup was kind of weird, Read more [...]

Dustin satisfies his WWII appetite with Battle of Britain (1969)

Just a quick post to let everyone know I'm still alive. I have been watching movies, I assure you. One recently was Battle of Britain. It was one of many WWII flicks sitting on my shelf that are waiting for my viewing. A few months ago, I posted about watching A Bridge Too Far. Like Bridge, Battle of Britain had a fairly large, epic scope and a lot of familiar faces. The movie begins after Germany has already bullied their way west, and taking over France, their eyes now set on England. Their tactic Read more [...]
