Best Time Travel Film in the Last 20 Years!

Djake brought his Blu-Ray copy of Looper for Sam and I to borrow while he was in Boston the next week and a half. We immediately watched the movie that night since we have been looking forward to seeing it after hearing so many good things. The cover of the Blu-Ray was pretty cool with a gun-pointing Bruce Willis and also an unrecognizable Joseph-Gordon-Levitt looking tough. See, J-G-L is actually B. Willis, just 30 years younger. It took a bit to get used to as J-G-L’s makeup was kind of weird, but I’m glad they decided to go the old fashioned route instead of generating Willis’ likeness onto Levitt’s face using a computer. J-G-L did a fantastic job of acting like B. Willis, for sure! Djake was telling me that J-G-L studied Willis’ mannerisms pretty extensively.

Yippie-Ki-Yay, Joseph-Gordon-Levitt!

In the future (2044, I think) there’s these Guys that get paid to immediately execute people that the future mob sends back in time that they want to get rid of. Pretty interesting concept. What’s more interesting is that Joseph-Hyphen-Levitt is one of these “executors”. What’s crazy is his future self, Bruce Willis, gets sent back to be executed. Guess who’s waiting there to execute him?? I don’t watch many movie trailers anymore because I think they give away too much, but what I assumed from my limited trailer-watching of Looper was that Levitt and Willis would join forces to fight some bad guy from the future. That part of the movie surprised me because Willis ends up persuing his own motives, and Levitt is trying to stop him. Makes you think about stuff on so many levels!

That’s what I liked so much about this movie. It kept me thinking about what I would do in a similar situation and about time travel in general. This movie was written and directed by the guy who made Brick, so, if you’ve seen Brick, you can guess how many turns this film probably takes. Sam and I often paused the film to make predictions or talk about the workings of time travel itself. It was a really fun experience watching it.

Top scores all around for action, acting, special effects, makeup, and writing. I give this film a 16/17 on the old Sitz-O-Meter. Check it out! I think it’ll be at Redbox soon. Otherwise ask Djake.

  1. I also really liked this movie! I think it’s pretty cool how it actually seemed like that could be a future that could really happen (well, not necessarily the time travel part). But the way the city and the country looked, with things like the crappy near-modern trucks that were modified… that kind of stuff actually looked believable. As cool as flying cars would be, I just don’t see them…(pause to put on sunglasses)…

    TAKING OFF…

    …any time soon.
