Jake Likes Zero Dark Thirty and Goes On A Short Feminist Rant

"Kathryn Bigelow is a female director who makes "male" movies. Just look at Point Break or The Hurt Locker". Nearly every review I've ever read about Ms. Bigelow either starts like this or mentions it at some point. This is very confusing to me. There are literally hundreds of male directors who make "female" movies every week, but no one ever feels the need to mention the gender of the director in a short review. Garry Marshall has made a career out of so-called "chick flicks" (ie Princess Diaries, Read more [...]

The Post “Best of” Movie Dump: The Rest of 2012

For me, Christmas is a great time to ask for all of the movies that you might not always buy yourself, and if it wasn’t for you getting them as a present, then you might not see them at all. This last Christmas, I made it a point to squander other peoples’ best of the year lists to see what I might have missed out on, and the result was that I found a couple of gems that might have been overlooked by the general public. I’ve already watched most of them, so I thought I’d throw a little bit Read more [...]

Dustin takes a break from movies and goes Downtown. Downtown Abbey, that is.

I bought Sam Downtown Abbey on the Blu-Rays for Christmas. We just finished season one. I liked it, a lot. The thing that drew me to Downtown Abbey was the setting and time period. I kinda have a thing for mansions, and I kinda have a thing for early 20th century history. During the first episode, however, I figured that this show offers more than that. It drew me in like reruns of 90210 did to me when I was in high school. There's about 16 characters and they all have something interesting Read more [...]

Dustin rewatches The Iron Giant and gets an idea…

The Iron Giant is a great movie, but I noticed it was a familiar plot. There are two other movies that pretty much are identical to it that would make a great triple feature. I don't think this is some awesome original idea, but thought it would be fun to mention. Let me know if you try it. Also, if you think of any other movies that fit the same plot line, mention them. I'm sure these aren't the only three... Read more [...]

Ryan Reviews The Tree of Life

I've been visiting my family and friends this last week, so I've been pretty busy hanging out and having fun. I'm sure a lot of other people are doing that, too (I know that's the main reason it's been quiet at Cinematic Attic in the last week or two), and it's good people are having a nice break. I've also been watching a lot of movies, about 5 or 6 in the last week, and I've been meaning to write a review of at least one. We'll be doing a series of year-end/new-year posts in the next week, but Read more [...]
