Cinematic Attic’s Top 12 Movies of 2012

We’ve been talking about it for the last week, and now it’s finally time to lay our cards on the table. Here is our list–Click on the titles in green to go to our reviews of each movie. Enjoy!

CINEMATIC ATTIC’S TOP 12 MOVIES OF 2012:

1) Moonrise Kingdom
2) Django Unchained
3) Prometheus
4) Dark Knight Rises
5) The Avengers
6) Cloud Atlas
7) Looper
8) Cabin in the Woods
9) Frankenweenie
10) ParaNorman
11) The Hobbit (2)
12) Skyfall

Now, a few notes about the way we figured out our list. Each Cinematic Attic Editor gave a list of his or her Top 6 movies to Deuce, our resident Genius. He did something with a logarithmic parabola to get a derivative… um, how about I just let you read what he said about it:

Each movie in our own lists received a number of points based on how well they were ranked (1 point for the lowest ranked movie, 2 points for the next, and so on up). The points were totaled from each of our rankings.  To also account for how many votes were received for each movie as well, the final Top 12 list is based on a subtotal score which was calculated by multiplying the number of votes by the point total.

Also, let’s take a look at how our list compares to our Readers’ Poll:

The poll results as of the evening of January 13th, 2013.

As you can see, the top 2 match up with our list, which is pretty cool. After that the similarities fall apart a bit. Also, the category “Other” got 4 votes. That’s Ryan’s fault, since he forgot to include a few movies (he didn’t want to make the list too long, and it was his first poll so get off his back). Fortunately, since he created the poll he can see the complete results, including “Other.” As you can see, Silver Linings Playbook would have made the list right after The Dark Knight Rises:

Anyhow, if you participated in our Readers’ Poll, thanks very much! What do you think about the poll results, or about Cinematic Attic’s list? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.

Our writers may also be talking more about their lists in the coming week, including some movies that we’ve not reviewed yet. Thank you also for reading the blog, and let’s hope that 2013 is as filled with good movies as 2012 was. Have a great week!
