Welcome back to our week-long series on notable movies from 2012! Today we’ve got Deuce’s short and sweet commentary on The Hobbit. The movie made our group’s Top 12 list, as well as some of our individual lists (although not all of us have seen it due to its very late release date). Also, you can check out Jake’s review of the movie here for another perspective. So, without further Peter Jackson-esque stalling, here’s Deuce’s post:

Deuce: I am going to assume you know about The Hobbit. I’m not going to tell you what the plot is or who starred in it. I assume most of you know that already. If you don’t know, that’s stuff you could just look up on a website, like the Internet Movie Database, or something. I just want you to know the short and sweet of why I liked it.

I saw The Hobbit in a flat 24 frames per second. I loved it. There was a high presence of CGI, but it didn’t distract. There was some “fluff” scenes that Jackson probably needed to add or extend, since he’s turning a 350 page novel into three movies, but they were fun and slowed the story progression down a bit (not a bad thing, folks). Martin Freeman was absolutely fantastic as Bilbo. His performance made me realize how good of an actor he is. Gollum was so realistic that he looked like a googly-eyed Andy Serkis. Deuce says go see it, and don’t worry about paying extra for funny-looking glasses or a higher frame-rate that will just give you an un-realistic realism. Just enjoy as nature intended. It’s a classic!

This does not have the status that the original trilogy holds for me. I see that in the future I can probably merge the Lord of the Rings and hopefully, the Hobbit trilogy together as one classic saga. With that said, The Hobbit was a strong 10 out of 10.
